The Injury That Forced Me To Change My Usual Workout

I fractured my clavicle bike racing. I got tangled in a pack sprint and went over the handle bars and landed on my left shoulder. Hairline fracture of the collar bone - so it wasn't that bad, but still, I couldn't ride my bike for a while.

How I Exercised While Injured

I spend a lot of time on the stair climber. It was the easiest way to get a good cardio and leg workout without putting any pressure on my arms and shoulder. Over time, I was able to get on the stationary bike and my trainer with light pressure on my arms.

I was lucky to have a gym membership, so I had lots of options, but if I was just at home I probably wouldn't have gotten the same workout.

Lessons Learned

  • After my injury the last thing I felt like doing was exercising because I was really sore. But, I found that the exercise made me feel better, and doing something helped my get back in shape so much faster than if I would have sat home and moped. It also helped my stay connected with my team mates and kept my spirits up despite sitting on the sidelines. Staying active is a good way to recover faster - mentally & physically.
