How Did It Happen?

I was cooling (walking out) my horse down at the end of a ride. She had a freak aneurysm and fell down with me on her. I had already started trying to escape during the fall, but she landed on my right foot and crushed it (even with my thick leather boots on). It was horrible, and she passed away in front of me within minutes. I went to the hospital within a few hours ( I had to deal with issues relating to my horse), they did CT scans and splinted my foot until surgery a week later. The surgery was for a disintegrated section of my foot, not the Talus. I had a clean fracture all the way through the Talus.

How Was Your Recovery?

I was put in post-surgery splint for a month and then a boot. After a month and a half, I started physical therapy for mobility of my foot, but was not allowed to put weight on my foot.

I am due for xrays next week and am supposed to be cleared to bear weight in two weeks (12 weeks from surgery/13 from accident). I hope everything is clean at the next xray, and I can walk when expected.

So far, recovery has been painful. If I leave my foot down too long it swells up A LOT and is very painful. Physical therapy is painful too, but has helped range in motion. My ankle area is very sore. I also get bruising discoloration.

The doc says I may get arthritis and no running or anything that puts a lot of shock on my Talus again ever.

I hope to be able to get on horses again ASAP. We'll see what they say next week.

Tips and Tricks

  • I kept my foot elevated, or it would swell and hurt even more. Hot water soaks helped it to relax and the pain to temporarily disperse. I stayed off of my foot like directed. I also used a knee scooter to get around since crutches were very exasperating.

How Long Was It Before You Returned to Sports?

I am still recovering but am hopeful that I will be riding horses again as soon as my bone is cleared as healed.
