Bicycling is an ideal way to build endurance, strength, confidence and overall fitness, but few women venture into the world of bike touring. While many women will use the exercise bike at the gym, or ride a few miles around town, few consider combining their fitness routine with their vacation plans. The best kept secret of the bicycle is that it can be the basis of a vacation that actually brings you home well-rested but in better shape than when you left.
I joined a small women-owned tour company called Luna for their bike tour in soutwest Utah. My trip was well organized and carefully planned, with a comfortable dynamic within the entire group that put everyone immediately at ease. The riding was challenging, yet never more than we could handle.
The trip was designed for beginning and advanced cyclists. Our trip leaders created an atmosphere that was cooperative, encouraging and non-competitive. They offered everyone great support and assistance, yet they were extremely flexible to the needs of the individuals. We never felt like just another rider. We felt challenged by the riding, but never overwhelmed. The leaders were concerned and interested in each of us, but never intrusive. And their support didn't stop at the riding. As an example, by the second day our tour leaders knew who liked what vegetables and who didn't like cheese. And they prepared meals accordingly. It was a pleasant surprise to everyone in our group. They worried about the details, we just pedaled. It was the perfect trip.
