Definition: The Latissimus dorsi, or back muscle, is the largest muscle in the upper body. It extends from the spine, hip and ribs to the upper arm.
Origin: The spinous processes of thoracic T7-T12, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest and inferior 3 or 4 ribs
Insertion: The intertubercular groove of the humerus bone
Its prime function is to extend, adduct, and rotate the arm medially and move the shoulder down and back.
