Before You Buy Sports Nutrition Products

Endurance athletes can improve performance through good nutrition. In general you can get everything you need from a well-balanced diet. However, there are times when athletes benefit from pre-packaged sports nutrition products. They are not only convenient, but they are designed for specific athletic needs. Bars, gels and drinks are at the top of the list of most purchased sports supplements. Take a look at the following, befoe you buy.

Energy Bars
If you want a variety of flavors in an easily digestible, convenient package, energy bars are the perfect sports nutrition. Eat an energy bar about 30-45 minutes before a race along with 16 ounces of fluid for optimal digestion. During long (> 90 minute) events, you can take a bite of a bar at 15-20 minute intervals. At the end of the race, eat one to regain lost energy. But keep in mind that nothing beats real food like bananas and pretzels to regain the lost vitamins and minerals.

Sports Drinks
For athletes to stay well hydrated it is recommended that they drink 1/2 to 3/4 cup every 15-20 minutes during exercise. In long endurance training or events it is ideal to use a sports drink to replenish lost fluid and sodium. In order to increase intake, many athletes find sports drinks taste better, are easily digested and provide needed nutrients before, during and after exercise.
