New Debate About Disposing Expired Medicine
It used to be recommended that leftover and expired medicines should be flushed down the toilet, but according to a recent news report scientists are now debating that method. The EPA says flushing is no longer a good idea, as many pharmaceuticals remain unchanged after wastewater treatment, and could harm fish and encourage development of drug-resistant germs. Officials say better choices are finishing all of a medicine so there aren’t leftovers, putting the drugs in the trash, or seeing if your local hazardous waste program will accept expired medicines.
