How I Sprained My Ankle
I did not sprain my ankle, I strained the posterior tibial tendon in my ankle that connects to the back of the shin. I'm 20 years old and this happened 8 weeks ago today (3/27/12) at spring football practice. I was running a slant route and the ball was thrown behind me so I tried adjusting to the pass and caught the ball backwards, but in the process I landed awkwardly on my left foot and felt a pop over the bone that sticks out on the inside of the ankle and knew something was wrong. Crawled off the field and was immediately helped by the training staff. Became black and blue the next day and I could barely walk.
What Do You Think Contributed to Your Ankle Sprain?
I was born with extremely flat feet. (The 3 doctors on the training staff at my school said I had the ugliest/flattest feet they've ever seen) I've sprained both my ankles numerous times over the past 4 years, and whenever I do not have a brace on or have them taped, I usually roll one or the other. And that's what happened in this case; I decided not to wear an ankle brace because I would've been late to practice had I took the minute to put it on. I also had a high ankle sprain and foot sprain last May (5/2011) at the same time of this same ankle. But since that healed, I didn't seam to have any problems with either ankle. I would never really have pain when playing sports, but after playing sports I would be a little sore each time and just ice when necessary. It's been 8 weeks since the injury and I just got my first MRI last night so I will be waiting to hear from my doctor in the next couple of days. I never got an MRI at first because the doctors at my school had the ultrasound one day and used that to see the tear of the tendon. 4 weeks ago today is when I tweaked it (which didn't seem like that big of a deal because I was still able to walk, but I have made zero progress over the last month).
- During my injury, I was able to stay fit because I was on the football team and the training staff was really helping me rehab. I was doing upper body workouts to stay in shape and after a couple weeks I did walking and jogging in the pool. After 4 weeks I started jogging on the field (8 x 100 yards) and then 20 minute agility workouts. But I felt pain still and must have tweaked it then during a ladder drill. My advice to others is that if you never want to deal with any sort of ankle/foot injury, wear ankle braces or get taped before sports activity. If I had done that, I would not be going through this still.
How Long Was It Before You Returned to Sports?
2 months later, still not even close to returning to sports. I still slightly tweak it every once in a while from taking a wrong step or walking up/down the stairs too quick, etc.
