How I Sprained My Ankle

I played organized football, basketball and lacrosse from 8th grade to my Sr. yr. in college! I SPRAINED my ankle (right) EVERY yr. except one, in one of these sports! Most typical case, (point guard) drive the lane, jump attack rim to shoot or pass off and while maneuvering around D-fence of players in air land on right toe, and instead of landing toe, mid-foot, heal would land toe, FRONT of ANKLE...my ankle felt like it did or it did a COMPLETE 180!!! OUCH!!!

What Do You Think Contributed to Your Ankle Sprain?

WELL playing sports! (lol) If I was one of the kids that hung out in parking lot before games smoking and drinking and only there to watch I'm sure my ankles would have been SAFE!!! lol!

Seriously..freshman yr in college I took a biomechanics class and professor ask for volunteer (1st week) I did. She had me sit on her desk and she looked at the bottom of my boots and in 1 sec. pointed to my right foot and said "you sprain that ankle a lot don't you!"...blew me away! Either by my 4 previous sprains or naturally my foot drooped to that side! My boot was really wore on bottom on out side of toe side! So by foot/ankle being this way...so whenever I would land the tip or top of my toe would hit first and foot would ROLL forward! OUCH!!

Advice

  • DON'T SPRAIN your ANKLE!! Did I mention OUCH!! If you have an ankle/foot condition like mine! Get a good trainer to tape your ankle for THAT CONDITION! Holds toe UP!
  • If you do sprain ankle! Be aggressive in your rehab! Bucket of ice water, 5-10 min. in (OUCH) 5-10 out (AW!) Repeat 3-4-5 times! That's first day! 2nd-5th day Same ice/water bucket thing BUT while out of water stand on both feet and put weight on bad foot/ankle and begin moving threw RANGES OF MOTION!! OUCH! 3-4 cycles! Then end with ice bucket (OUCH) to WARM WATER bucket (AW) 2-3-4 times! Kick back on couch with foot up and have Mom spoil you!

How Long Was It Before You Returned to Sports?

If you sprain it BADLY!! You're OFF it for 2WKS! DO YOUR REHAB!! DON'T rush it! I've rushed it, it DOESN'T WORK! 3rd WK will tell you a lot! Listen to your ankle! I was playing by 3rd to 4th 5th week!
