Definition: Cycling cadence is determined by the number of revolutions of the pedals a cyclists makes each minute.

Elite cyclists typically have a cadence of between 80–120 rpm while recreational cyclists might pedal at about 60–80 rpm.

Lance Armstrong was known for his very high cadences of around 120 rpm for hours on end.

In general, it's believed that a higher cadence improves efficiency, reduces stress on the knees and build aerobic fitness better than a low cadence. However, a rider's comfort often determines the most efficient cadence for him or her.
