All substances, whether medications or vitamins or supplements, carry potential risk of complications even if they are called "natural" and "herbal." While there is continued evidence indicating that some natural and herbal products have value, many also may cause a variety of side effects and interact negatively with prescription and other medications. In some cases these substances can interfere with, or reduce the effectiveness of other medications.

For example, Gingko biloba, Garlic and large doses of Vitamin E can all interfere with blood clotting (similar to aspirin), and should not be used if you are having any surgery. St. John's wort may interact with some anesthetics, and Echinacea can limit the effect of some steroids.

There are also benefits to many of the herbal supplements. Arnica , for example, may help reduce swelling and bruising. It's important to discuss any and all supplements you are taking with your physician. [
