March 29, 2004Study Fails to Show Massage Speeds RecoveryMany believe that massage can improve recovery in athletes following high intensity exercise. However, there is little research to support this theory. A study published in the April issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine attempted to answer this question. The conclusion: "No measurable physiological effects of leg massage compared with passive recovery were observed on recovery from high intensity exercise, but the subsequent effect on fatigue index warrants further investigation."
