Shock Waves Treat Tennis Elbow
The FDA has approved a new device to treat chronic tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). The OssaTron, is a device that delivers high-energy shock waves that break-up the scar tissue that builds up in the elbow with lateral epicondylitis. The non-invassive prodecure requires just one 20 minute treatment. In a recent study, of the 225 patients who received the treatment, 90 percent reported an improvement of symptoms and 64 percent rated their outcomes as good or excellent. While mild or newly diagnosed cases of tennis elbow often get better after several weeks of rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication, some physicians believe that the treatments provide an option to surgery for their patients with moderate to severe tennis elbow.
