Hyponatremia Getting More Attention
Hyponatremia, or low blood sodium levels, has become more and more common in endurance athletes, and many governing bodies are changing their hydration recommendations accordingly. This phenomenon is discussed in the July issue of the Physician and Sports Medicine. The take-away: to prevent complications of low blood sodium levels, endurance athletes are advised to be aware of the effect of dehydration as well as over-hydration and plan their fluid intake according to their individual needs.
