Kobe Bryant suffers and ankle sprain on the basketball court

According to perhaps the largest descriptive epidemiological study of ankle sprain in the United States, nearly half of all ankle sprains occur during sports. And of those, the majority (41.1 percent) occur on the basketball court.

This was the finding Brian Waterman, M.D. presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA. Waterman and his team reviewed all ankle sprains reported at emergency departments from 2002 through 2006. Their findings reviewed the top sports-related ankle sprain causes as follows:

Ankle Sprains and Sports

  • 41.1% - Basketball
  • 9.3% - Football
  • 7.9% - Soccer
  • 7.2% - Running

Ankle Sprains Prevention and Treatment

If you play these sports, it would be a good idea to take a few preventive measures to reduce your risk of an ankle injury. Learn what causes a sprain, how to avoid one, and how you can recover faster if you do sprain your ankle.

Oh, so true. I wasn’t a bit surprised upon reading the details of this finding. Having watched many basketball games in the past, I’ve seen my fair share of injuries. Sometimes, my friends who played were not even aware of the seriousness of the injury, for they just took it as minor when they accidentally tripped or slid while playing.
