According to perhaps the largest descriptive epidemiological study of ankle sprain in the United States, nearly half of all ankle sprains occur during sports. And of those, the majority (41.1 percent) occur on the basketball court.
This was the finding Brian Waterman, M.D. presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA. Waterman and his team reviewed all ankle sprains reported at emergency departments from 2002 through 2006. Their findings reviewed the top sports-related ankle sprain causes as follows:
Ankle Sprains and Sports
- 41.1% - Basketball
- 9.3% - Football
- 7.9% - Soccer
- 7.2% - Running
