New Research: Quercetin Supplement May Increase Aerobic Endurance

Thursday June 25, 2009
A new study published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that taking the nutritional supplement quercetin improved the aerobic endurance in a group of healthy, but untrained individuals.

The subjects in the study took 1000 milligrams of quercetin a day for a week and showed a 13.2 percent increase in endurance and a 3.9 percent increase in VO2max.

Granted, this is a pretty small study (12 subjects in all) and clearly more research is needed before athletes should be encouraged to load up on quercetin. However, some of the past research shows other benefits of the supplement due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Quercetin has also been linked to a possible reduction in the risk of colon cancer and heart disease.
