Mouth Guards Don't Limit Sports Performance

Mouth guards are essential during sports that have a risk of injury to the mouth, but many athletes still avoid them. According to surveys with athletes, a major reason they don't use a mouth guard is that they think it will interfere with breathing and speaking, and ultimately reduce their sports performance.

A new study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine found that athletes who used a mouth guard performed as well with the mouth guard as without it The researchers tested 13 elite ice hockey and handball players with custom-fit mouth guards and had them perform an exercise test on a stationary bike. Although they initially complained of difficulty speaking, and breathing over time the athletes became more comfortable with the mouth guards.

It's important to keep in mind that experts, as well at the American Dental Association, recommend a custom-fit mouth guard made by a dentist for the best fit, comfort and protection. However, an over the counter mouth guard is still probably better than none when it comes to protecting your teeth.

The most effective guard should fit well, be comfortable, stay in place, be durable, easy to clean and should not restrict speaking and breathing. Learn more about mouthguards and how they can save teeth and prevent mouth and jaw injuries.
