Tiger Woods Has Arthroscopic Surgery

Thursday April 17, 2008
According to news posted on his official web site, golfer Tiger Woods had successful arthroscopic knee surgery on his left knee on April 15 to repair cartilage damage. He is expected to return to competition in four to six weeks.

"I made the decision to deal with the pain and schedule the surgery for after the Masters," Woods says on his web site, and tells readers that he had been having knee pain since the middle of last year.

Arthroscopic surgery is the standard outpatient treatment to damaged cartilage such as chondromalacia or meniscus injuries.

Returning to activity too soon after the surgery can increase therisk of re-injury or developing a chronic problem that will lead to a longer recovery, so a strict rehab protocol is usually set up with your surgeon. There are also some general return to sports guidelines that you and your physician can discuss.
