Barry Bonds indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice

Thursday November 15, 2007
Baseball's home run king, Barry Bonds, has been indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice. The indictment charged Bonds with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for telling a federal grand jury he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison.

This comes not long after Marion Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice and admitted taking steroids before the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

What is THG?
Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) is a designer steroid that has a similar chemical structure as other steroids banned in sports. It seems as though THG was specifically manufactured so it would not be detected in doping tests. The FDA banned the sale of THG in 2003. They said it was not a supplement but an unapproved drug, which makes any sale or use of it illegal.

What Are Anabolic Steroids?
Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of the male hormone testosterone. Athletes have been found to use steroids illegally in order to build muscle strength and speed for sports. Using them is risky, though, because they can have dangerous side effects, including:

  • liver damage
  • heart disease
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • "roid rage" - intense outbursts of anger and mood swings.
  • as well as other side effects
