Changing Treatment for Tennis Elbow

The first long-term study of arthroscopic release surgery for tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) confirmed that it is a successful treatment option for tennis elbow pain. The original study, published in The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in 2000, found positive short-term results of arthroscopic surgery in 30 patients. This new study continued to follow those patients for 130 months and found very good outcomes in pain relief and elbow function. There were no repeat surgeries and 93% of the patients said they were happy with the results.

Regarding the cause of tennis elbow, research published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that your tennis swing technique, not the racket grip size, may be the main cause of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). In the past, many sports medicine physicians would recommend players with tennis elbow switch to a different size racket grip to treat and prevent these injuries. This new study finds no correlation between grip size and incidence of overuse injuries.
