Sports Cream Overdose Causes the Death of a High School Track Star

Tuesday June 12, 2007
The New York Times recently reported on a 17-year old high school track athlete who died after accidentally overdosing on an over-the-counter pain medication that contains methyl salicylate. Methyl salicylate is an anti-inflammatory found in sports creams like Bengay and Icy Hot that can be absorbed through the skin. This sort of absorption can lead to toxic levels in the blood and cause the same symptoms as an overdose of aspirin (nausea, vomiting, sweating, rapid breathing, and ringing in the ears) and possibly death.

Just many medications can be purchased over-the-counter it doesn't mean they are harmless. It's important to read and follow the label directions and ask you doctor or pharmacist for any clarifications.
