IT Band Friction Syndrome

Wednesday May 9, 2007
The iliotibial (IT) band is a tough group of fibers that run along the outside of the thigh [see image]. It begins at the hip and extends to the outer side of the shin bone (tibia) just below the knee joint. Iliotibial band syndrome is due to inflammation of this band. A simple stretch can often reduce pain symptoms.

Some information must be missing in the simple stretch for the IT band. If I place one leg behind the other standing up and lean I immediately am off balance and have to spread my legs so I don’t fall over.

Couldyou be more detailed in your explanation. A graphic or photo of someone doing this might clarify.
