Achilles Tendon Rupture
Thursday November 27, 2003
The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body, and while it is strong, it is not particularly flexible. It will stretch only so far before it tears or ruptures. Often an athlete with an Achilles tendon rupture isn't aware of the extent of the injury, because there is often little warning, and very little pain. Occasionally, the athlete will hear a 'pop' and may think something has hit the back of his ankle. The classic sign of an Achilles tendon rupture is not being able to lift up onto ones toes, although it may be possible to point the toes while not weight bearing. A complete rupture will require a surgical repair.
